Weekend Olympia thrift-haul

With our summer upon us, we are traveling more and more down to the Olympia area to visit with friends and family, spend time on the family farm and of course shop the Tacoma-based Goodwill stores!

This weekend my mother, sons and I hit the Olympia Goodwill and picked up some great bargains on their RED TAG sale!

This Ann Taylor navy dress was 1/2 off $5.99!  I also picked up a brand-new Target brand pair of pants for the little one for $2.00, a gift book for a friend (one of the first editions of Louise L. Hay’s “You can heal your life” a classic!, a $1.00 packet of Hanukkah tissue (thinking ahead, always thinking ahead!) and a book for my soon-to-be-sixth-grader about all the things a 6th grader should know.

When we got back yesterday I went to check on my container garden and weed the weeds and VOILA!  I had my first harvest of radishes to enjoy!  My container gardens are doing lovely and besides the radishes already coming in, the parsley and the tomato plant are thriving nicely and my basil is even finally making an appearance!

We are enjoying all this wonderful Seattle sunshine this week… how about you?

Goodwill Gifts for a Green-thumb Grandma

It’s a bit past mother’s day (in fact about a month later) but we haven’t seen our Grandma (or Nana) since before then so we haven’t been able to give her the Mother’s Day gift until now.

So one of these items (the plant/flower fabric “basket”) was an item I picked up at my FIRST Goodwill run in January, right after I started this challenge.  I picked it up at the Port Townsend Goodwill and I can’t remember how much it cost but I knew it was going to be for my mom, the green-thumb in our family, as a gift.  So I’ve been purchasing things to go in it for months… the grandmother frame I posted back on May 6th in the “Mom’s the Word” post and I picked it up for only .99 cents!  The fridge-magnet photo of the baby I picked up was part of an entire set of them I purchased @ the Olympia Goodwill
for only $4.99!  The brand-new gardening gloves I picked up @ the Seattle Dearborn Goodwill for $1.29 and the cute, Hallmark (brand new w/ packaging!) caterpillar card I picked up again @ the Olympia Goodwill for only .99 cents!

The gift turned out really cute and perfect for our green-thumbed Nana!  Now only if I could get my little container garden to yield goodies like her garden gives her!  Practice, practice, PRACTICE!

Goodwill Garden *Update*

This last month I planted a Goodwill Garden on our balcony and this weekend I wanted to leave you with something inspirational…  So  today (in over 3 years of being here) a lot more activity is sprouting up in our little corner of the complex!

Have a GREAT Memorial Day Weekend and…

Go, Go, Seattle Sunshiny Summer!

Goodwill Gardening

Finally!  May is here!  And with it comes the Maypole, Sunshine and eventually May Flowers!!!

So I definitely wanted to celebrate the coming of this month and the changing of seasons with a gardening post!  Just because we Thrifters like to comb the racks of our local (indoor) thrift-store for deals does not mean that we can’t feel the sunshine on our faces as we do things outside the thrift-store!

So to start this month and season change out right I’ve put together a gardening Thriftspriation video during one of our beautiful NW days.  We enjoyed the weekend by attending the Fremont Market to purchase some of our garden sprouts (not something Goodwill sells, live plants) because if we can’t purchase second-hand we want to try and purchase local.  We found this great vendor at the market, Seattle Plant Company (thanks Emily!), and the video shows you how we used our Goodwill purchases, and these items from the Fremont Market (and two other items, gravel and potting soil, from Lowes) to get outside and grow some goodies!

Enjoy the video and get outside to enjoy the sunshine when you can!  Maybe we can encourage some of our local Goodwill stores to start putting racks outside (like a Goodwill sidewalk sale?!) so us shoppers can get some sun rays while we shop?!!
